BUZZ MARKETING
If a tree falls in the forest and no one is hears it fall, does it make a sound? If a brand advertises and no one notices the ad, have they advertised at all?
I, owner and principal designer at All Yours Solutions, recently read Buzzmarketing: Get People to Talk About Your Stuff by Mark Hughes (available at the Estes Park Library for those of you interested in making a name for your brand). Below are some outtakes from buzzmarketing.com as well as from Mark Hughes' book. This book is easy to read, easy to understand, and may change the course of your business forever.
Pull vs. Push
Most marketing, advertising, and PR follows a "push" strategy.
No one wants to be pushed into buying something.
Buzz marketing, however, is completely different. Buzz marketing creates a "pull."
Buzz marketing is:
...capturing the attention of consumers and the media to the point where talking about your brand becomes entertaining, fascinating, and newsworthy.
...creating a conversation starter.
By capitalizing on word-of-mouth, the oldest, most effective form of marketing on earth, we can get people talking about your brand by designing your marketing campaign to include Hughes' six secrets to creating buzz:
- The taboo (sex, lies, bathroom humor)
- The unusual
- The outrageous
- The hilarious
- The remarkable
- Secrets and mysteries (both kept and revealed)
